Course content
Morning: lower-limb venous anatomy, pathophysiology of thread and reticular veins, pre-procedure assessment, exclusion of underlying venous insufficiency, sclerosant pharmacology, consent, photography. Afternoon: supervised live-patient injection on multiple cases.
Recognising venous insufficiency
A core skill for safe sclerotherapy is recognising when thread veins are a marker for underlying venous insufficiency that needs vascular referral. We cover history-taking, examination findings, when ultrasound assessment is necessary, and when to refer rather than treat.
Adverse events
Skin staining, telangiectatic matting, ulceration, deep venous events. Recognition, management and prevention. We share the consent processes, photographic documentation and adverse-event protocols we use in our own clinic.
Common questions about Sclerotherapy Course
Q.Do I need vascular ultrasound experience?
A.Not for thread vein sclerotherapy at this foundational level. For larger varicosities and reticular vein protocols, ultrasound assessment is increasingly relevant — we discuss this and signpost more advanced training routes for clinicians wanting to extend scope.
Q.How does this differ from laser thread vein treatment?
A.Sclerotherapy and laser are complementary modalities. We cover when each is appropriate, the relative outcomes and recovery, and how to set patient expectations. Some practitioners offer both; the course gives you the basis to integrate sclerotherapy into a broader thread vein service.
Q.Can sclerotherapy be done in the summer?
A.Practically yes, but post-procedure care often involves compression and avoidance of significant sun exposure to the treated area. We cover seasonal scheduling and how to discuss it with patients so the treatment plan fits their lifestyle.
Q.Are live patients guaranteed?
A.Yes — live patient practice is central to the course and is planned in advance. We always have backup arrangements with course assistants. Every attendee completes supervised injections during the practical session.
